About
Jason Behnke was born in Camden, NJ with an overactive imagination and a habit of closely observing people and situations. He moved constantly throughout the northeast of the US until driving across the country to Portland, OR and eventually the outskirts of Seattle, WA where he settled with his wife and cats in the shadow of Mt. Rainier beside a lake.
After being trained in traditional oil painting and illustration at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Jason transitioned to digital media in 2009, and over the following several years he worked on adopting his traditional, classical methods of painting to digital painting. His digital painting technique involves all of what he learned with oils - from reference gathering to sketching and drawing, laying down the stain and establishing the underpainting, then applying the overpainting and glazes, only now he does it all within Corel Painter.
He has illustrated for Dungeons and Dragons, Magic: the Gathering, Legend of Five Rings, Call of Cthulhu, Fantasy Flight Games, Chaosium, Catalyst Game Labs and many other games, books, ccgs, rpgs and other media. He is the lead artist, graphic and layout designer for the independently published Liminal rpg and its supplements.
Jason runs Behnke Design LLC, a small graphic design and marcomms business with his wife for logo design, branding, internal/external comms, social media, print collateral, white papers, press releases, posters and banners, event support, video editing, presentation design, and more. Clients include Nike, Unisys, KPMG, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Intel, HP, CMD Agency, Fortive, Opus Agency, and many others.
Finally, Jason is the author and illustrator of the Book of Urm anthology - a collection of hand-crafted tales set in a vast fantasy world developed over thirty years. Each story is a study into the psyche of its characters, exploring the intricate web of their relationships and the personal journeys that shape them. This anthology intends to remind us that the most compelling stories are those that reflect our own lives - filled with the intimate drama of existence, the beauty of connection, and the wonder of the complex, often relatable, and sometimes bizarre world around us. This collection is a haven for those who seek solace in the written word and find adventure in the depths of human experience.
